5 of the Most Common Pests in Nevada

Las Vegas is known as the city that never sleeps because of its gambling, entertainment, and weddings. But, with the continuous flow of people coming in and out of the city, it is no wonder that the city also plays a host to dozens of different pests not to mention that these pests love the climate this city offers.

Here are some of the most common pests Nevada is harboring:

Cockroaches

Cockroaches have never been popular with homeowners because of their creepy appearance and their disgusting behavior. These pests have long been invading the valley and are considered a major pest in the area. Four of the most prevalent roaches that are infesting Las Vegas are the American cockroach, the Oriental cockroach, the German cockroach, and the Australian cockroach.

Scorpions

Las Vegas is the perfect place for scorpions because of its hot summers, dry winters, and its desert lands. But, these scorpions also tend to get indoors, especially when the weather cools down. These scorpions will try to enter your home and may inflict pain when they are stepped on or when they feel they are threatened. Although no one has ever been reported of dying because of a scorpion, their sting can still cause allergic reactions that may also be life-threatening.

Spiders

There are so many different types of spiders found in Las Vegas, but there are three notorious spiders that are considered a threat to people. The desert recluse, black widow, and the camel spider are the most common and are known to provide harm to their victims. A bite from these spiders may cause fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc. The desert recluse can even provide their victim a fluid-filled blister that will become a deep, enlarged ulcer. While most spiders are harmless, these three are considered dangerous and should not be handled, especially by children.

Africanized Honey Bees

The Africanized honey bees are not actually American breed bees, but they are created as a hybrid of African and European honey bees. Now, they are becoming a pest in Nevada because of their wild behavior. They will create nests near homes, which can attack when they are disturbed. They are even known as killer bees because they tend to attack in groups and can potentially harm their victims.

Mice

Mice are known to carry different diseases that can potentially be transferred to humans. Some of the most common rodents in Nevada are the house mice, deer mice and white-footed mice. These rodents commonly leave their urine and feces anywhere, which humans can contract.

What You Can Do to Eliminate Pests

While it may be difficult to control pests, especially that the city provides them a great place to live in, homeowners can still do something to control these pests from getting in. A continuous effort of pest prevention in and around the home is still considered the best defense against them. Always checking and maintaining the quality of your property will also allow you to have a safer home against these pests.
