Common Pest Problems in Hotels on the West Coast
Ants
Ants are everywhere, so the west coast is no exception. Argentine ants are what you are most likely to encounter. When they venture indoors, they seek oils and sweets to consume or carry back to the nest. They are not venomous and do not carry disease, but they can be a nuisance and get all over everything.
Rodents
Rats and mice are fairly common in this area, particularly roof rats, Norway rats, and house mice. Roof rats are very capable climbers that nest in walls and attics inside, and vines and trees outside. They prefer higher ground and are more prevalent in coastal areas. Norway rats are bigger and nest much lower to the ground. They live under wood piles and garbage sites, and frequent basements, if accessible. House mice are even smaller that roof rats. They are found closer to human populations, because of available food. Though they do not carry harmful pathogens, they will consume food and contaminate food supplies with bodily waste.
Spiders
Most common dwelling spiders live out of the way in corners at the tops and bases of connecting walls. They are necessary to controlling insect population, and do not deliberately to come in contact with human beings. The same goes for the Black Widow spider, which is common to the west coast. This spider may be considered one of the most poisonous, but the amount of venom released appears to be fatal only in situations where the victim suffers from contributing pre-existing conditions. The females, the only ones you need concern yourself about, are black with a telltale red hourglass on her abdomen. This should be easily spotted as she spends the majority of her time tummy up.
Western Black-legged Ticks
These insects exist is fifty-six of the fifty-eight counties in the state of California. They attach themselves to humans and other hosts and spread Lyme disease. They are mobile from late fall to spring, especially during the winter, and lay 900-1000 eggs at a time. Take extra care when spending time in grassy and wooded areas.
Particular kinds of pests are common to the west coast, and travelers should be aware and be prepared for what is common to their destination location.
