Warmer weather is approaching in New Mexico, which means bugs are, too!
During the winter months, many insects seek shelter from the cold and implement a winter resting phase, which is why we may not see very many around our homes and businesses. However, when temperatures and moisture begin to increase in the spring and summer months, so do insect appearances.
Bug Proof So They Bug-Off!
Many insects coming off winter hibernation are beginning their adult life stages, which means they’re highly mobile, hungry, aroused, and on the search to fulfill those needs. Others appear in masses after rainfall, seeking water and higher ground from flooded nests. Both of these situations are most common between the spring and summer months of March through August. So, how can you bug-proof your home in light of the coming spring showers and summer heat in New Mexico? Follow these tips:
Seal Cracks & Openings
It’s obvious insects can crawl their way through any opening, even a small crack—so, close them up! Check every
area and opening of your house, such as windows, doors, and screens. If you discover any sort of crack or opening
that could serve as an entryway for unwanted visitors, seal or repair it immediately! Furthermore, try not to leave
windows and doors open, as this is the easiest way for creepy crawlers to sneak their way into your home.
Keep It Clean & Dry
All bugs are on the hunt for food and water, items that can easily be found in every home. Keep all areas of your home, especially the kitchen, free of food and water. Make sure surfaces, such as counters and floors, are cleaned frequently and are free of debris and crumbs. Store food in sealed containers or bags, and yes, this includes your pet’s food, too! Dry any areas that may be wet, such as the bathroom, laundry room, and kitchen, as some bugs like to dwell in damp places. Immediately repair any leaky pipes, faucets, or drains and check appliances, such as the refrigerator and washer, to ensure they’re working properly. And of course, when it rains, make sure to close all doors and windows to keep out the moisture and bugs!
Clear Outside Debris & Indoor Clutter
From stacks of wood and trash outside to piles of clothes and papers inside, insects of all sorts hide or make their nests in piles of debris and clutter. Keeping your home clean and clutter free, both inside and out, is an easy way to help deter bugs. Check for bugs before bringing any items inside and remove items outside that may attract bugs, such as standing water or weeds.
