Do I Have a Cockroach Infestation?

Cockroach Infestation

Cockroaches are known vectors of disease and an infestation can not only be unsightly but unhealthy as well. The sooner you get a pest control professional involved in getting rid of your infestation, the sooner you can get control of your home again. Keep an eye open for these four signs of roaches; the earlier you can detect a problem, the faster it can be eliminated.

Of course, if you see a roach in your home, chances are you have a problem – or at least you have a budding one. Roaches are nocturnal, preferring to hide during the day, so you are more likely to see them at night. When you turn on the light you might see them frantically crawling for a dark corner. If you happen to see any roaches during the day, that is a very good indication that you have a problem and you need to take action immediately.

You see roach droppings

Roaches eat almost constantly due to their extremely metabolism and this results in lots of roach droppings. The appearance of feces will vary according to the type of roach you are dealing with. You may notice brown stains, pepper-like specks, coffee grounds, or even pellets. Look in cabinets, drawers, behind appliances, and even behind paintings on the wall. If you see a lot of feces present that is usually a good indication that you have an infestation.

You see roach egg casings

Roaches are prolific breeders. They don’t lay individual eggs, but instead many eggs in a casing. When you see these brown, oblong casings you have irrefutable proof that you have roaches – most likely a roach problem. The problem is, most DIY pest control methods never reach the areas where the roaches lay their eggs. You may find the empty casings in cracks, in cupboards or pantries, behind appliances or furniture, and when you find them you need to get a pest control professional in right away.

Sighting of cockroach indicating infestationYou smell roaches

When roaches are present they often create a musty, pungent odor. The larger the infestation and the longer it is allowed to go on, the stronger the smell can become. As roaches die and decompose, it produces oleic acid which is the cause of the odor. You can smell these odors as they tend to linger but can cause your furniture and clothing to smell, and it can even affect the taste of food that you keep and prepare in your home.
