What You Need to Know About Cockroaches

Cockroach ControlWe’ve all heard people talk about cockroaches crawling on someone’s wall.  It’s the stuff of both horror movies and comedy skits alike.  What a mortifying experience – imagine how you would feel if a cockroach sauntered its way across the wall while you had guests in your house?  What would they think of you?

We have all thought about that in one way or another.  We might have tried to rationalize that roaches are a city problem.  With so many people living in such close proximity it is easy to carry and spread them from house to house.  We have dismissed the idea of having roaches because we consider ourselves clean people.  But neither of those reasons are guaranteed to keep roaches out of your home and, subsequently, off your wall for all to see.

Don’t worry – if you thought the above reasons would keep roaches out of your house, you’re not alone.  But it’s time to learn more about roaches, where they hide, and what having roaches really means about your home.  Get ready to feel your skin crawl (we hate to be the ones to have to tell you, but…

Surprise!  Look up!

Cockroaches like to hang out on ceilings in dark rooms.  So if you walk into a room in the dark, there could be a roach hanging out above your head.  How are they getting there?  Perhaps through a crack in the ceiling of through the crown molding.

They like to be in damp areas

Not in your bath water, but cockroaches congregate near the pipes that bring the water in your house for sure.

Cockroaches love newspaper

Cockroaches love to eat newspaper or lay their waste in it… either/or.  So if you have a tendency to hoard old newspapers, you might have a few critters enjoying a delicacy in there.

Cockroaches like kitchens

This is because cockroaches like our food as much as we do.  Look for them in the sink or counter – wherever food particles might be left.

Are you sufficiently grossed out yet?

Having cockroaches doesn’t necessarily mean your house is dirty.  What it does mean is that you might have spaces in your home that are uninhabited (guest rooms, basements, etc.).  They don’t get as much traffic so a pest entry point and hiding place wouldn’t be noticed.

If you see cockroaches in your home don’t be discouraged.  Even those these contortionist, light-footed, winged menaces are hard to kill, they are not immortal. They can be eradicated.  The key is to do it right away so that you can avoid infestation.
